Explain the procedure for orotracheal intubation.
Answer:
- Gather all equipment and required medications
- Laryngoscope
- Endotracheal tube
- Stylet/bougie
- Tape to secure ETT
- 10ml Syringe to inflate cuff with air
- Sedative such as midazolam
- Paralytic e.g. sux
- Ventilator
- Capnograph
- Pre-oxygenate with 100% Oxygen for 3-5 mins
- Position patient - sniffing the air position
- Administer medication
- Should be given with running IV fluids
- Laryngoscopy
- Pass ETT just beyond vocal cords
- Intubation
- Inflate cuff
- Check position via auscultation and capnograph
- Secure ETT
- Check CXR if applicable
